Kurt Mullican is the co‑founder, co‑owner, and lead cheesemonger of Greys Fine Cheeses, Memphis’s beloved specialty cheese shop known for its curated selections, educational experiences, and artisanal approach to cheese. Alongside his partner, Jackie Mau, Mullican launched Greys in 2019 as an online cheeseboard business before expanding into workshops, pop‑ups, and collaborative culinary events across the city. Their success eventually led to opening Greys’ first brick‑and‑mortar location in East Memphis in 2021.
A lifelong food lover, Mullican’s culinary roots stretch back to his hometown of Lebanon, Tennessee, and his work in Memphis as a private chef. Cheese, however, became his passion and creative foundation. He describes it as the constant thread in his approach to food—an artisanal craft rich with history, complexity, and endless learning. Whether guiding beginners or seasoned turophiles, Mullican brings an infectious enthusiasm to helping others discover new flavors and traditions.
Before opening their storefront, Mullican and Mau traveled to creameries across the country, studying production methods and building relationships with cheesemakers in order to bring thoughtfully sourced, small‑batch offerings to Memphis. Their popular made‑to‑order cheeseboards—intricately paired with fruits, meats, nuts, condiments, and breads—remain a cornerstone of the business, now complemented by Greys’ cheese bar, workshops, classes, tastings, and curated retail selection.
Mullican views cheese not just as food, but as storytelling—an artisanal product shaped by land, tradition, and skilled makers. His philosophy emphasizes unlearning preconceived ideas, embracing personal taste, and encouraging exploration.
