Chef Jimmy Gentry is a James Beard Award Semi Finalist and one of the leading voices redefining modern Southern cuisine. Based in Memphis, Tennessee, Gentry blends classical training with bold vegetable-driven creativity, positioning his city firmly within the national dining conversation. Formally trained at Johnson & Wales University, Gentry first gained acclaim as Executive Chef of Erling Jensen: The Restaurant, where he restored its 4-star rating, earned six consecutive “Best Restaurant” awards, and cooked at the James Beard House in New York City. His leadership later extended across a nine-restaurant casino portfolio before he turned his focus toward mentorship, entrepreneurship, and concept development.
In partnership with Alia Hogan, Gentry co-founded Paradox Catering & Consulting, now the largest boutique catering company in the Mid-South, building a portfolio that includes private aviation catering, artisan charcuterie production, and the underground, invitation only dining series Paradox Underground Experience.
In 2022, he opened The Lobbyist, a refined, vegetable-forward restaurant that has quickly become one of Memphis’ most celebrated dining destinations. In 2024, one of his dishes was named among The New York Times’ Best Dishes of the Year. In 2025, The Lobbyist earned Michelin Recommended status, and in 2026, Gentry was named a James Beard Award Semi-Finalist.
Through disciplined technique, ingredient-driven storytelling, and elevated Southern hospitality, Gentry continues to push Memphis onto the national culinary stage.
