Chef Hugh Balthrop is the founder and creative force behind Sweet Magnolia Gelato Co., an artisan, small‑batch gelato company rooted in the Mississippi Delta and celebrated across the South. Known for his deeply personal, craft‑driven approach to gelato-making, Balthrop has become a standout Southern culinary artisan whose flavors reflect local agriculture, regional stories, and uncompromising creativity.

Originally from Washington, D.C., Balthrop began his career in the arts, owning an art gallery in the Adams Morgan neighborhood before relocating to Clarksdale, Mississippi, with his wife Erica, who returned home to practice medicine in her community. What started as a simple effort to make all‑natural ice cream for his children quickly evolved into a full-fledged passion. Tapping into a business incubator and working with small gelato machines, he began producing what would become Sweet Magnolia Gelato—a handcrafted product made with organic milk and seasonal ingredients sourced from local farmers, including muscadines, berries, peaches, and regional pecans.

Founded in 2011, Sweet Magnolia Gelato Co. now produces hundreds of rotating flavors—more than 300 by some accounts—each mixed by hand and labeled individually by Balthrop and his small team. His signature small‑batch method and personal touch extend beyond the kitchen; colleagues and partners describe him as a business owner deeply invested in his customers, employees, and community.

Under Balthrop’s leadership, Sweet Magnolia has grown from a Delta-based operation into a beloved regional brand, with retail partners and gelato shops in Mississippi and Memphis. Balthrop’s creative Southern flavors—including Espresso Brownie, Blood Orange, Whiskey & Pecans, and Miss Mary’s Poundcake—have earned a loyal following and expanded the company’s footprint throughout the Mid‑South.

Beyond culinary innovation, Balthrop is committed to community empowerment. Sweet Magnolia Gelato Co. actively supports youth development initiatives, reflecting his belief in lifting up the next generation through mentorship and opportunity.

Today, Chef Hugh Balthrop is recognized not only as a master gelato maker but also as a community-centered entrepreneur whose work brings together artistry, Southern heritage, and meaningful local impact.
